Beach walks are one of the favourite types of walks during the warm season. Many dogs truly enjoy different beach activities, and one of those activities is obviously swimming. 🏖Many dogs love to swim, but not all of them do. Let's discuss it a little more.

It's not even about your dog's breed. We've seen Yorkies who absolutely love to swim and Labs who prefer sunbathing over actual "bathing". So, if your dog hates swimming, just let it be and find some other fun activities to enjoy spending quality time with your dog.

In case your dog didn't have any previous experience of contact with "big" water (washing paws and bathing don't count), here are some tips on where to start.

-The first rule of the swimmers' club 🤓 - you can talk about it anywhere you want but don't pressure your dog!

-Let your dog get used to the idea of contacting with water.

-Let it come close, wet its paws, run along the shore, sniff and explore.

-Use positive reinforcement when your dog shows interest and some courage while contacting the water but never force.

-If your dog has a favourite toy, you may throw it towards the water, not too close to it though (at least at the beginning).

-In the beginning, try to choose beaches with a smooth water entry over the cliffs. It will also be perfect if the water depth near the shore is shallow with gradual deepening. -Some dogs may feel safer if their owner goes into the water with them, but please don't make that rookie mistake when you throw your dog into the deep water, and the scared little fella has to swim ashore. By doing this, you may permanently discourage your dog from even going close to the water.

Let your dog take its time, don't put any pressure, and you'll create a positive association with water for your dog. From this, your chances of getting a water-loving dog will increase.

Remember that some dogs might fall in love with swimming from the first dip, but some others need more time to get used to the idea, feel safe and become more confident with the idea. Also, some dogs who enjoy swimming in smooth water (like a river, pool or lake) may be a little shaken by the ocean or the sea waves. It's totally okay. Just let them get used to this new arrangement and gain their self-confidence.

In the next post, we'll talk about some basic safety measures during beach walks and swimming.

But for now, tell us in the comments about your dog's relationship with big water.
